Who Is Dr. Dobson?

Dr. Yoeny Calas-Dobson the Pet DivaDr. Yoeny Calas-Dobson, DVM, has been a practicing veterinarian for more than 20 years, with extensive education and experience in caring for wildlife, ratites, avians, reptiles and other exotic animals in addition to cats and dogs.

Born in Cuba, she emigrated to the United States with her parents when she was two years old and grew up in the Miami, Florida area where she flourished both academically and socially. She received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida in 1980. She then pursued her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University National Autonomous de Mexico (UNAM) located in Mexico City.

Upon her graduation in 1985, she went to the Animal Medical Center in New York City for an intensive postgraduate program. Later, she relocated to Oklahoma City where she enhanced her education by specializing in Ratites (ostriches, emus, and rheas).

She practiced emergency medicine and surgery, and performed ranch calls to the surrounding cities. In 1993 she received her ECFVG certificate from Oklahoma State University and relocated to Provo, Utah. She established RiverWoods Pet Hospital in 2000, a full service veterinary hospital that specializes in small animal, avian and exotic pets.

As owner and founder of RiverWoods Pet Hospital in Provo, Utah, she provides the community with the latest in conventional Western veterinary techniques and traditional Chinese medical care. She recently joined with four other veterinarians in establishing Utah County’s first independent after-hours animal emergency hospital, Pet Urgent Care, located in Orem, Utah.

Dr. Dobson established PAS (Pet Assisted Services), a 501-C-3 organization, to fund the expenses of treating injured and sick wildlife, domestic pets with no owners, and pets with owners who can’t afford care. This program continues to grow and benefit animals and the people who care for them.

Dr. Dobson is a board member of American Indian Services, a non-profit organization that helps Native Americans improve their quality of life through scholarships. She assists them by providing free veterinary and medical services on reservations.

An active UVMA board member for over 5 years and Utah Valley VMA president from 2002 – 2005, Dr. Dobson established the monthly “IHOP Morning Breakfast” for her colleagues allowing them to meet, network ideas, and support one another in their chosen disciplines. She has also represented the Central Region for the UVMA State Board since 2002 and is currently on the Public Relations Committee and the Emergency Response Committee for the state board.

Dr. Yoeny Calas-DobsonDr. Dobson is an enthusiastic horsewoman and owns several breeds of horses, including Arabian, Paint and Quarter horses. She enjoys the outdoors and adventure in the high mountains of the Pauhvant range in Holden, Utah, as well as the surrounding areas. Dr. Dobson also has an ostrich ranch in Mexico in association with the UNAM veterinary school.

A firm believer in education, Dr. Dobson takes every opportunity to expand her veterinary knowledge and to share it with the community through ventures such as PetWise radio, featured interviews on KUTV-2, public speaking engagements, and the Internet with her websites, RiverWoodsPetHospital.com and PetWiseMedia.com.

Dr. Dobson is now also a Faculty and Program Advisory Committee member of Broadview University located in Orem, UT. As a member of the faculty she teaches courses in the Veterinary Technology Program such as, Lab Animal and Exotics, where she shares her veterinary expertise and experience with those looking to start a career in animal care. A strong proponent and advocate for animals, Dr. Dobson is committed to providing the best education possible for the community and those looking to advance their careers in Veterinary Care.
