No one will ever forget the images of a hurricane ravaged Gulf Coast or the bleak desolation of a wildfire.   Media inundates us with pictures of human misery and also the suffering and plight of the animals.  Abandoned pets, forcible separations, and video of dogs and cats desperate to survive have now been etched deeply into our memories.

After the disastrous 2005 hurricane season, new legislation mandating the accounting for people’s pets in disaster plans was proposed and enacted.   The Pet Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS Act) was signed into law in 2006.   This bi-partisan initiative insures that any state asking for federal assistance in emergency situations must have plans for accommodating pets and service animals during evacuations.

Hybrid Breeds – Designer Dogs Or Disaster in the Making? http://old.petwisemedia.com/hybrid-breeds-designer-dogs-or-disaster-in-the-making/ http://old.petwisemedia.com/hybrid-breeds-designer-dogs-or-disaster-in-the-making/#respond Sat, 11 Sep 2010 11:03:47 +0000 http://www.petwizemedia.com/?p=209 ImageThey are all the rage across the United States and beyond.   Cross-breed dogs such as cock-a-poos have been around for many years, while newer crosses, such as labradoodles and puggles keep rising in popularity.  So, are these dogs a new “hot” breed or just a designer mutt?

Some historians and dog enthusiasts have traced certain breeds of dogs back almost 8,000 years.   This lineage may show that humans began selective breeding of dogs soon after first domesticating the wild ancestors of our family pet.  The American Kennel Club officially recognizes more than 160 breeds with almost 60 listed as Foundation Stock.  With all these breeds to choose from, why would anyone want to create another?

The current rage of “new” breeds probably began in the late 1970s by an Australian trying to help find a seeing-eye dog for a woman whose husband was allergic to most dogs.  According to the International Labradoodle Association, www.ilainc.com, a member of the Royal Guide Dogs, suggested mating a Labrador to a Standard Poodle and thus the first “Labradoodles” were born.  One of the three pups born in the litter, Sultan, eventually made his way to Hawaii and the vision-impaired woman with the allergic husband.  Since that time, more than 3500 dogs have been registered with the ILA.  Miniature labradoodles have even been bred!

Top Summertime Tips for Pet Safety http://old.petwisemedia.com/top-summertime-tips-for-pet-safety/ http://old.petwisemedia.com/top-summertime-tips-for-pet-safety/#respond Mon, 05 Jul 2010 23:15:30 +0000 http://www.petwizemedia.com/?p=204 ImageSummertime!  Finally, your chance to relax and unwind!  With your sunblock, sunglasses and a good book, you plan to enjoy the day at the pool! Suddenly, you remember your dog is in the yard – unsupervised …surely he will be okay for a couple hours.  Or will he?

Summer temperatures might be great for tan lines and boating trips, but the excessive heat and increased outdoor activities could spell disaster for your pets.  As the mercury rises, take just a few moments to insure that your pets are safe and prevent an urgent trip to the animal ER with a summertime emergency!

The most common heat related problem for pets is heat stroke.  Also known as heat stress or hyperpyrexia, heat stroke is a real emergency for dogs.  Even on moderately warm days, an excited dog might show a body temperature increase of 2-5 degrees Fahrenheit.  Since dogs don’t sweat like we do, they are unable to dissipate the excess heat and heat stroke may soon follow.

Lyme Disease Takes Flight! http://old.petwisemedia.com/lyme-disease-takes-flight/ http://old.petwisemedia.com/lyme-disease-takes-flight/#respond Tue, 13 Apr 2010 00:44:28 +0000 http://www.petwizemedia.com/?p=199 ImageEveryone knows that ticks, those creepy spider cousins, have the potential for carrying some pretty serious diseases to our pets.  But, what’s less well known is that these blood thirsty parasites may be arriving in your backyard after traveling by air!

Robins and many other songbirds are often the heralds of springtime and warmer weather just around the corner.  Unfortunately, a new report is stating these welcome spring visitors are quite possibly spreading a serious disease of humans and pets…Lyme Disease!

When most people think about Lyme Disease, they automatically think about the eastern seaboard of the United States.  While it is true that states near Connecticut account for almost 90% of all cases reported, Lyme Disease can be found in all 50 states and is truly a global disease.

Holistic Veterinary Medicine…Helpful Treatments or Terrible Hoax? http://old.petwisemedia.com/holistic-veterinary-medicinehelpful-treatments-or-terrible-hoax/ http://old.petwisemedia.com/holistic-veterinary-medicinehelpful-treatments-or-terrible-hoax/#respond Sun, 07 Mar 2010 20:36:57 +0000 http://www.petwizemedia.com/?p=198

For many pet owners, the mention of holistic medicine conjures up images of incense-filled rooms with baskets of herbs and a multitude of candles.  But, increasing numbers of pet owners actually seek out veterinarians who incorporate alternative or complementary therapies in their practice.  Is there science to support their beliefs?

In our westernized society, alternative forms of therapy and medicine are often viewed with suspicion and occasionally, outright disbelief.  Practices like acupuncture, acupressure or even homeopathy have many critics.  Still, when it comes to resolving their pets’ ills, some pet owners are willing to take a chance on a non-traditional treatment.

Holistic medicine is generally defined as medical care of the whole pet, including environment, social and personal factors as opposed to the focus of treating just the disease.  Integrative medicine embraces both conventional Western styles with holistic practices.  Many people refer to non-traditional medicine as alternative or even complementary medicine.

Pet Dentistry Without Sedation – Worthwhile or Just Surface Changes? http://old.petwisemedia.com/pet-dentistry-without-sedation-worthwhile-or-just-surface-changes/ http://old.petwisemedia.com/pet-dentistry-without-sedation-worthwhile-or-just-surface-changes/#respond Sun, 07 Mar 2010 20:28:59 +0000 http://www.petwizemedia.com/?p=197 ImageIn veterinary medicine, dental disease is seen in almost every animal.  But, in our busy lives it’s hard to find the time to do regular preventive care.   Adding to the problem, dental cleanings under general anesthesia seems risky to many.  Recently, anesthesia-free pet dentistry has become a fad.  However, is this option good care and safe long term?

With more than 85% of pets over age three suffering from some sort of dental disease, veterinarians are constantly reminding clients to provide at home dental care for their pets.  In addition, most veterinarians encourage annual dental exams and cleanings for their patients followed by care at home.  Still, pet owners are reluctant to follow these recommendations.

Some people are actually leery of anesthetics used for dental procedures.  In response to client concerns, some people have developed Anesthesia-Free Pet Dentistry (AFPD) protocols.  Marketing brochures show calm dogs sitting on the laps of “pet dental hygienists” who gently scrape tartar off the pet’s teeth.  For anyone who has a senior pet or anyone who has lost a pet under anesthetic, this idea might seem to be right on target.

Can An Ear Implant Save a Dogs Life? http://old.petwisemedia.com/can-an-ear-implant-save-a-dogs-life/ http://old.petwisemedia.com/can-an-ear-implant-save-a-dogs-life/#respond Sun, 07 Mar 2010 20:17:11 +0000 http://www.petwizemedia.com/?p=196 ImageEar cropping is considered unnecessary and cruel in today’s modern society.  Only a handful of breeds still allow cropped ears in the breed standard.  Still, hundreds of dogs every year show up in breed rescues with deformed and ugly ears from surgeries that went bad.  And, adopting or foster families often pass over these pets because of their bad looks.  Read how the inventor of Neuticles has created an implant that may help some of these homeless dogs find their forever homes.

Ear trims and tail docking are subjects that are sure to cause controversy in a room full of animal lovers.  Considered unnecessary and even cruel, many veterinarians have stopped performing these procedures altogether.  In a time when cosmetic surgeries on pets generate strong emotions, why would anyone introduce a product designed to help a dog’s floppy ears stand up straight?

Our favorite dog breeds come in all shapes and sizes.  From the monstrous Mastiffs and Great Danes to the petite and fragile Yorkies, there seems to be a breed built for everyone!  But, some pet owners and breeders have continued a long tradition that many find completely unneeded and even repulsive…cropping the pet’s ears!

Feral Cats: The Forgotten Felines http://old.petwisemedia.com/feral-cats-the-forgotten-felines/ http://old.petwisemedia.com/feral-cats-the-forgotten-felines/#respond Sun, 13 Dec 2009 03:00:41 +0000 http://www.petwizemedia.com/?p=194 ImageSneaking through back alleyways and abandoned lots, millions of feral and stray cats make their homes in our cities and rural areas.  Often fearful of people, these “wild” cats are blamed for everything from decimating bird populations to killing sea otters.  What’s the truth behind these feral felines and why are some people so determined to save their lives?

Cat lovers are abundant across this country as is evident by the more than 80 million pampered felines sharing our homes.  But, living outdoors is another huge population of cats that has far fewer admirers and lives in constant danger of imminent death, usually at our hands!

There is no way of knowing for certain, but experts estimate that the feral cat population in North American equals or even exceeds the “owned” cat population.  A feral cat is one that is unsocialized to humans and actively avoids contact.  Stray cats, on the other hand, are often ones that have left home or are cats that have been abandoned by their owners.  These “strays” will often approach humans and even allow petting.  All cats, feral, stray and owned cats who are simply roaming the neighborhood are all members of our domestic species, Felis catus.

Weight Loss: Shedding Pounds With Our Pets! http://old.petwisemedia.com/weight-loss-shedding-pounds-with-our-pets/ http://old.petwisemedia.com/weight-loss-shedding-pounds-with-our-pets/#respond Sun, 13 Dec 2009 02:55:51 +0000 http://www.petwizemedia.com/?p=193 ImageLosing weight is a challenge for both people and their pets.  With obesity levels at an all time high in North America, how can we reverse the trend and start shedding those pounds?  The good news is that working out with your pet has definite advantages!

They might not understand the aerobics instructions and they can’t use free weights, but it’s possible that our pets may be just as valuable as expensive exercise machines in helping us humans lose weight.

A twelve month study recently completed has shown that exercising with your dog has several positive benefits for both owner and pets.  The People and Pets Exercising Together (PPET) study showed people who are trying to lose weight often need a positive support system of friends, co-workers and relatives.  Unfortunately, these same people can negatively affect an individual’s exercise plan by sabotage and even negative influences.  Exercising with your pet however, brings unique encouragement and fun not seen in other programs.
